Setting yourself a time limit ensures that you stick to that time frame by staying focused on that one task instead of trying to multitask. Humans are not designed to multitask and whilst some may boast about their ability to do several things at once it actually results in the job not being completed as well as it could be.

Our brains are not designed to focus on several different things at once. Constant interruptions or cognitive overload whilst completing a task increases a person’s stress levels which dulls our brain.

A recent study conducted by the University of Sussex found a link between multitasking and an increased risk of damage to the brain. The study showed that people who constantly multitask have lower brain density in the area of the brain that’s responsible for cognitive control, empathy, and emotional control.

By setting time frames for each task you avoid distractions and remain focused on the task at hand. Another study found in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that people who consistently multitask reduce their productivity by up to 40%. If you find yourself constantly going over your time slots for each task then start to make notes about what is going wrong.

It could be that you’re simply not allocating enough time to get the task done or you could be getting distracted by certain outside influences.
